Not many people think of Lapland as a summer destination mainly because it is so heavily associated with Santa and Christmas and of course all of the winter activities. Lapland however is a fantastic summer destination where the weather is warm and the days long. The further North you travel in Lapland the longer the days become in the summer months and Lapland experiences the midnight sun where there is 24 hour light for sometimes several weeks of the summer.
Like winter, Lapland offers some great summer activities, there is some fantastic fishing and Lapland is a fantastic haven for walkers with totally unspoilt countryside to explore. There are wild berries and mushrooms growing up on the hillsides and the bird population is great for those interested in bird watching. There is also the opportunity to bear watch with several places offering a unique opportunity to visit certain bear habitats. You will get the opportunity to sit out in hides and watch from above as the bears go about their daily lives.
Canoeing and white river rafting is also another great activity, of course in the winter months you may find yourself skiing across the frozen lakes and rivers but in the summer months, the lakes and rivers are fast flowing offering great opportunities to travel down the rivers and lakes at great speed.
The restaurants and bars are all open in the summer months and are surprisingly quiet which is great when you have had a day of activities, for relaxing and enjoying good food and a couple of drinks.
There are all sorts of other activities going on in the summer months in Lapland and camping out in the wilderness is just another great activity to become involved in. There are designated camping sites which you can use and there are certain sites where they allow you to have a camp fire provided you clean up afterwards. Gold panning is also really popular in Lapland and they hold the gold panning championships every year. This activity is especially great for the children to become involved in and they can also enter the competition.
Lapland holds many pleasures in both the winter and the summer months and the unspoilt beauty of Lapland in the summer will simply take your breath away. The locals in Lapland love all seasons, even though the winter lasts over 200 days, the locals will throw themselves into the winter activities in the winter and absorb the beautiful summer months.
